Role models play an important role in the lives of athletes, especially high school student-athletes. Whether it is a celebrity or someone close to home, the person and athlete they become is shaped in part by who they look up to.
The person that Kareffren Bagby Jr. looks up to is someone very close.
“My mom is the biggest role model in my life,” he said. “She has shown be what it takes and what to do in order to get where I am today. She has also been there for me and with me every step of the way.”
Bagby is a sophomore at Preston High School where he plays forward and guard for the Pirates. He played his first basketball game when he was in the first grade and has played it since.
Kareffren says that he is thankful for all of the teachers he has had throughout his educational career.
“It would be tough for me to pick a favorite one,” he said. “They all bring different personalities and ways of thinking. I am just thankful that I am on of the students they teach.”
Becoming the athlete that he is today has not been something that just happened overnight. It has required a lot of work from Bagby but he knows it will be worth it.
“There has been a lot for me to get where I am today, both as an athlete and a person,” he said. “Hard work, dedication, and the want to do the work. But seeing my growth has made it all worth it.”
Kareffren is also a member of the National Honor Society, where he does different community service.
“We do different things to help the community,” he said. “We have done toy drives and we also do volunteer work through school activities and programs.”
One of the most important things for Bagby is the example he sets for those younger kids that look up to him.
“I thank God for the abilities he has given me,” he stated. “I am glad that I can be a role model for my four younger siblings and all the younger students.”
