The Class 2A state tournament featured the Lady Lions from Howe and the Lady Rebels of Silo. Behind senior Makayla Twyman, Howe got out to a big lead and never looked back winning their sixth state title, 71-57. Technically it’s back-to-back titles for Howe as no championship game was played in 2020. VYPE editor Brad Heath caught up with the Class 2A tournament MVP Makayla Twyman moments after the win. VYPE: We have to know. Did you get any sleep last night? Twyman: It was hard to go to sleep, but we got in our room and went to sleep because we were ready to wake up and play this game. VYPE: Who is the unsung hero of this team? Someone who works hard for little recognition. Twyman: Caitlyn Stacy (Sr.). She does everything on the court, she brings us together. She’s a great leader, great teammate and I’m just glad to have her on my team. VYPE: Who is the motivator in the locker room? Twyman: Everyone. We’re all behind each other. We encourage each other all the time. Even when coach Brown yells at us everyone picks each other up. VYPE: This team was at the top of the ranking all year. You came into the tournament as the No. 2 team in the class. What was it like night in and night out getting everyone’s best shot? Twyman: We knew that everyone was going to come to play us and try to beat us and every time we stepped on the court, we were ready to play. We’re glad we got here and won this game. VYPE: Was there a point in the season when this team felt this state title was yours to lose? Twyman: I feel like we overcame a lot of adversity and we all came together as a team. We stuck it out and left it all on the court. VYPE: This is a back-to-back championship because you were part of the team in 2019 as a sophomore and the 2020 tournament was cancelled. Compare that 2019 team to this team. Twyman: The 2019 championship was great but this one feels even better because last year got cancelled and we were eager to get up here and play and show people we could do it as a team even though we lost Jalei Oglesby. VYPE: What was the game plan for Silo? Twyman: Defense. Coach Brown said dig, come out here and get after them and leave it all on the floor. VYPE: Howe returns a lot of players next year. Even though you won’t be back, what do you think this team can accomplish next season? Twyman: Next year I’m hoping they can come back and win it again! Three times in a row!
