Success is a word that remains synonymous with Spiro football and as head coach Chris Bunch, a member of the Oklahoma Football Coaches Hall of Fame begins his 30th season at the helm, the expectations for winning remain for 2020. Eight starters return to the speed based spread attack with a trio of Top 100 athletes at the top of the list including quarterback Nick Johnson (6-0, 170, Sr.) a run- pass threat to score on every snap enters his second season while sure handed and fast wide receiver Mekhi Roberson (6-3, 175, Sr.) returns at wide receiver. Adding downhill power to the Bulldogs ground game will be fullback Jeremiah Phillips (6-1, 180, Sr.). Experience, size and strength will once again be evident for the offensive front with a trio of linemen that graded 85% plus performances including Bryent Sebo (6-1, 235, Sr.), Clark Fant (6-0, 240, Sr.) and Peyton Upchurch (5-11, 225, Sr.). “We can be better balanced this year with the multiple options available including a true-deep threat on every snap,” explained Bunch. “Experience is an added plus to our lineup.”

The third VYPE Top 100 choice is a wrecking crew as inside linebacker Braxton Peterson (6-1, 190,Jr.) recorded six tackles for loss in making 79 stops including four fumble recoveries and will have protection on the edge from Cory Rodgers (6-0, 170, Sr.) who totaled 55 stops last season. The Bulldogs ringleader in the secondary Conner Rodgers (6-0, 170, Sr.) continuously is seeking contact at free safety where he grabbed four interceptions and three fumble recoveries while recording 90 tackles a year ago along with run/pass coverage insurance from Mekhi Roberson (6-3, 175, Sr.). Winning battles on the line of scrimmage will be a must and Bunch is confident in the returning experience of Jared Huff (6-3, 195, Jr.) who produced seven tackles for minus yards among his 49 takedowns and Trey Baker (6-2, 270, Sr.) who charted 42 tackles in 2019. “Defensively, we should be pretty good because of the way these kids get to the football in a hurry with force,” said Bunch. Altogether their talents let us be strong against the run and good defending the pass.”
